Directors Paying Themselves a Salary
Many one-person companies pay the director a small salary plus dividends. Paying any salary through the company usually means registering as an employer first. Read PAYE employer registration for the thresholds and timing, and speak to an accountant about the right salary for you.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does my company need to register for PAYE?
A company must register as an employer when it starts paying anyone who meets HMRC’s conditions, including a director paid a salary at or above the PAYE threshold, someone with another job or pension, or anyone receiving benefits. HMRC says this applies even if the only person paid is the company’s sole director.
When should I register?
Before the first payday, and not more than 2 months before it. HMRC sends your employer PAYE reference by letter, so leave time before the first payday.
How much does PAYE registration cost?
HMRC does not charge to register. CorpAssist charges £59.99 to prepare and submit the registration.
What does HMRC send after registration?
An employer PAYE reference and the details you need to pay HMRC. You then report pay to HMRC on or before each payday through payroll software.
Do you run payroll?
No. We register the company as an employer. Running payroll each month is done with payroll software or an accountant.
