Registered Office Rules Since 2024
The Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023 changed what counts as a registered office. From 4 March 2024 it must be an appropriate address: post sent there must come to the attention of someone acting for the company, and it must be possible to get proof of delivery. PO Boxes are no longer accepted. Every company must also keep a registered email address, which is not public.

If Companies House finds a registered office is not appropriate, it can move the company to a default address. The company then has 28 days to give a new appropriate address with evidence of its right to use it, or Companies House can start striking it off. See moved to the Companies House default address.
Removing Your Home Address From Old Filings
Moving your registered office to our address stops your home address appearing on new records. To remove it from older documents on the register, apply to Companies House with form SR01, which costs £34 per document (see GOV.UK guidance). A home address that is still the current registered office cannot be removed, so change the registered office first.

Registered Office Questions
What is a registered office address?
It is the company’s official address on the public register, where Companies House, HMRC and the courts send letters. Every UK company must have one, in the part of the UK where it is registered.
Does your address meet the “appropriate address” rules?
Yes. Since 4 March 2024 a registered office must be an address where post comes to the attention of someone acting for the company and delivery can be acknowledged. Our address is a physical office where post is received for your company, not a PO Box.
Can I use a PO Box as my registered office?
No. Companies House no longer accepts a Royal Mail PO Box or a similar service as a registered office. A company whose registered office does not meet the rules can have it moved to a Companies House default address and, if not fixed, be struck off.
Can I use my home address as the registered office?
You can, but the registered office is public, so your home address would appear on the register and in search results, and it cannot be removed while it is the registered office. Using a registered office service keeps it private.
Can I use it if I live outside the UK?
Yes. Directors can live anywhere. The company must be registered in England and Wales to use our address. Letters are scanned and emailed, so you see them wherever you are.
Can I put the registered office on my website and invoices?
Your registered office must appear on your website and business documents by law. If you want an address for customers and general business post as well, the business address service covers that.
How do I change my existing company’s registered office?
File a change of registered office with Companies House (form AD01, free online). It takes effect when Companies House registers it, and Companies House passes the change to HMRC. We send you the exact address wording to use.
What happens if Companies House moved my company to its default address?
Companies House can move a company whose registered office is not appropriate to a default address. You then have 28 days to give a new appropriate address with evidence of your right to use it. Our service gives you the address and a written confirmation you can use as evidence.
