How much does it cost to change a company name?
Companies House charges £20 to file online, £30 on paper, or £85 for same-day processing. CorpAssist charges £89.99 in total, including the £20 fee, the name check and the shareholders’ resolution.
How do I change my company name?
Usually by special resolution: shareholders holding at least 75% of the votes agree to the new name. The resolution and notice of change are then filed with Companies House, which issues a new certificate of incorporation.
Does the company number change?
No. The company number, the company’s bank accounts, contracts and tax references stay the same. Only the name changes.
How long does a name change take?
Online filings are usually processed within a few working days of Companies House receiving them, and the new name takes effect on the date of the new certificate. We file within 1 business day of receiving the signed resolution.
What should I update after changing the name?
Your bank, signage, website, email signatures, letterheads, invoices and contracts. HMRC is told by Companies House. Your name must be shown wherever the company trades.
Can I use any name I like?
Not quite. It cannot be the same as an existing company name, and some words need permission. Check it first with our free company name checker; we check it again before filing.
