Can I Use My Home Address as Registered Office? (2026)
Yes, you can use your home address as your registered office, but it becomes public and costs £34 per filing to remove later. Checklist and costs compared.
Yes, you can use your home address as your registered office, as long as it is in the part of the UK where the company is registered, post reaches you there and you are entitled to use it. The catch is that the address becomes public on the Companies House register, stays on every filing while the company uses it, and costs £34 per document to remove later. This guide gives you a quick checklist to decide, and compares the cost of using your home now with fixing it later.
Can I Use My Home Address as Registered Office? The Rules
Your home qualifies if all of these are true:
- It is in the same part of the UK as the company: England or Wales for an England and Wales company.
- Post sent there will come to the attention of someone acting for the company.
- Delivery of documents there can be acknowledged.
- You own it, or you have permission to use it from the landlord or owner.
A PO Box on its own is not allowed. The full set of tests is in our registered office address rules guide.
What Happens When You Use Your Home
- It is public. Anyone can see it on the register and on the company’s filings. The company must also show it on its website and on letters and order forms.
- It stays on old filings. Every document filed while it is the registered office shows it. Moving later stops new filings showing it, but the old ones stay public until you apply to remove them.
- Unwanted post and visitors. Public company addresses attract marketing post, sales calls and sometimes people at the door.
- Tenancy and mortgage terms. Leases and some mortgages restrict business use of the property.
- It often appears twice. If you also give your home as your director service address, it is shown next to your name as well. See registered office vs service address.
Use Your Home Now or Pay to Remove It Later?
To remove a home address from older filings you first move the registered office, then file form SR01 and pay £34 for each document. Our guide to removing your home address from Companies House explains the steps.
| Option | Cost | Home on the public register? |
|---|---|---|
| Home as registered office and service address | £0 | Yes, on every filing |
| Remove it later from 5 filings | £170 in SR01 fees, plus a new address | Removed from those 5 documents |
| Remove it later from 10 filings | £340 in SR01 fees, plus a new address | Removed from those 10 documents |
| CorpAssist registered office from the start | £39.99 a year | Not as the company’s address |
| CorpAssist registered office + director service address | £59.99 a year | No (your residential address is kept off the public record by Companies House) |
Decision Checklist
Using your home is reasonable if you can answer yes to all of these:
- I am happy for my home address to be public, with my name next to it.
- My tenancy, lease or mortgage allows it, or I own the property outright.
- I do not expect to move in the next few years.
- I do not mind the address appearing on my website and invoices.
If any answer is no, use a different address from day one. Options include your accountant’s office, your business premises or a registered office service. See registered office prices compared, or virtual office vs registered office if you also want post forwarding or meeting rooms.
Already Used Your Home? What to Do Now

- Update each director’s and PSC’s service address too.
- Apply with SR01 to remove the home address from older filings.

- Official letters from Companies House and HMRC scanned and emailed to you
- For existing companies, the change of address is filed at Companies House for you
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use my home address as my registered office?
Yes, if your home is in the part of the UK where the company is registered, post there reaches you and delivery can be acknowledged, and you are entitled to use it. The trade-off is privacy: the address is public on the Companies House register for as long as the company uses it.
Is it safe to use my home address as a registered office?
It is legal, but anyone can look the address up online. Common results are marketing post and calls, unexpected visitors, and the address staying on old filings after you move. If that worries you, use a registered office service instead.
Should I use my home address for my business?
For a sole trader working from home, often yes. For a limited company, the registered office, the directors’ service addresses and the address on your website are all public, so many owners keep the home address private and use a separate address for all three.
Can I remove my home address from Companies House later?
Only after the company stops using it. Move the registered office to another address first, then apply with form SR01 and pay £34 for each older document that shows your home address. Companies House cannot remove a current registered office.
Can I use my home address if I rent?
Check your tenancy agreement first. Many leases restrict business use, and GOV.UK says you should not use an address as your registered office without permission. The same applies to some mortgages and leasehold flats.
Can I use my accountant’s address instead?
Many accountants let clients use their office as the registered office, sometimes as part of their fees. Ask what they do with your post and whether they also cover your director service address.
